Cleaning Your Gutters

November 6, 2013

Cleaning your gutters is a chore that needs to be done for your home to prevent any future water damage.  To get the job done you have two options. You can hire a professional, or you can do it yourself.

It is important to clean your gutters twice a year to clear up any decaying debris. This will also prevent ice dams on the roof that could force the water inside the house.  There are many ways that you can go about doing this task: tongs on a long pole, climbing up on a ladder, or shop vacuums with gutter attachments.  If you are uncomfortable climbing ladders, it is best to call a professional.

While cleaning the gutters, it is important to wear the appropriate safety gear. Don’t forget your gloves, a dust mask, and safety goggles.  Ensure that the ladder that you will be using is stable and not leaning against your gutter, this is dangerous and could lead to dents and damage.  Use a garbage bag to collect all of the debris. Rinse out the small debris towards the downspout with a water hose and scrub out the rest with a towel.  Make sure the downspout is also clear of debris as the water washes out the last of it.  To prevent large debris from clogging the downspout, try placing a strainer over the opening.

Preventative house cleaning can save you a lot of dollars in the end.
